Lake County was formed in 1870. Prior to that year, the area was a part of Obion County. It is primarily an agricultural county yielding row crops of corn, cotton, soybeans, rice and wheat.
No-Till farming is utilized widely in Lake County.
Crop acreages in 2003 were cotton-17,990 acres; soybeans-44,516 acres; corn-14,053 acres, wheat 6,858 acres and sorghum-3,470 acres. Lake County is the smallest county in West Tennessee.
Lake County's largest industry is the Northwest Tennessee Correctional Facility, located in the extreme northwest area of the county. The institution's labor supply is supplemented with personnel from Dyer and Obion Counties in Tennessee and Fulton County in Kentucky.
Lake County's largest natural asset for tourism is Reelfoot Lake. This lake was created in 1811-12 by a series of very strong earthquakes. This body of water covers 10,000 to 12,000 acres. (A portion of the lake is in the boundaries of Obion County.) Reelfoot Lake is known as a Sportman's Paradise because of its excellent fishing and hunting opportunities.
